Summer

Like a calico stretch
in the sun on the floor
She sunk into the warmth
and opened a door

To joy
To love
To peace
To home

That summer she learned she wasn’t alone

They piled into the car
With no space for the fear
All song and all jokes
No memory of tears

New faith
No rush
New dreams
No rust

In summer she thought she’d learned how to trust

Dreams came crashing down
like the cities of old
The uncertainty now
was certain to hold

Her heart
Her mind
No fix
No time

The winter was cold when her heater resigned

The solstice approached
with silence unsure
No leaves left on limbs
gave shade to the poor

Dark night
Blurred days
No light
No faith

That winter was drought, nothing washed away

But sure as the sun
is just what they say
She learned she could count
on the dawn of new days

Learn joy
Find love
Feel hope
New sun

The springtime was new, something she didn’t trust

The years move so fast
Too many per season
They say home’s where the heart is
Cleches have a reason
